ASTRID S - PAPER THIN

When mentioned Norway, the first that comes to my mind is probably vikings and salmon fish. However, recently the Norwegian music scene is starting to garner attention thanks to artists like Kygo and Matoma, who essentially are one of the many key players that brought tropical house music to mainstream attention.

Anyway, today's article is not dedicated to them, but one of the collaborators of Matoma's hit track - Running Out. I'm talking about Astrid S.

Formerly coming out fifth place on Norwegian's Pop Idol, this 19 year old blonde debuted with "Shattered" a teeny country pop that fitted the then 17 year old Astrid Smeplass, her real name and then artist name.

Her first single 2AM marked a real change in her musical direction after switching label to Universal Music. 2AM is a downbeat, chill track that aims to bring a euphoric and effervescence high. Later in 2014, Astrid S followed up with another slow-burning ballad, Hyde. Similar to 2AM, added with Astrid's silky, high-pitched vocals Astrid brought listeners to another airy atmosphere.

After winning Best Norwegian Act in MTV EMA 2015, Astrid S up her game by releasing the studio acoustic version of her new track - Paper Thin. The slowly building piano sequences coupled along with her feather light vocals made this stripped down ballad fragile and vulnerable, yet more accepting. It reminds me a bit of Demi Lovato's emotional ballad, Skyscraper.

Astrid S later on released the original version of Paper Thin. Without losing her signature effervescence style, Paper Thin strayed away from the darker setting of her previous single and took on a more delicate and vulnerable approach.

With the continuous eye (and ear) opening performance by Astrid S, the only direction I see her going is up.
