Lukas Graham self-titled debut album is finally here! And I am honoured to dedicate my first album review to it :)
Opening the album with their international hit " 7 Years", it is clear that the central theme of this album will be filled with relatable emotions of someone's passing. As in the story of "7 Years", it sings about the passing of the lead singer's father and life after it. Evidently it resonates with audiences worldwide as "7 Years" currently peaks at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 100.
The album follows up with "Take the World by Storm"that sings about the strength to embark on an adventure to grow and learn and overcome challenges. It could be Lukas Graham telling the story of them breaking out of their hometown Christiana and going places with their music.
Lukas Graham album isn't one completely filled with somber and grief, like the next track "Mama Said". Sampling from the 2014 adaptation of Annie's "It's a Hard Knock Life", this song is a jolly one that makes you want to skip to the beat. It narrates how one should stay focused to their goals and people supporting them. One thing particularly enjoyable is the octave high at the last chorus. Probably one of the things I like about Forchhammer is when he lets his vocals sing free and with suave.
"Happy Home" continues as it sings a similar story to "Mama Said" but it is a more emotional version one. Sticking to the album's emotional theme, "Happy Home" is dedicated to Lukas Graham's support system as they adapts into the their new life and identity as a famous figure.
On and off Lukas Graham adds in some more light-hearted songs to relieve the heavy theme. Like "Drunk in the Morning", they took a break from emotional narrations and bring listeners on R&B soulful ride.
"Better than Yourself (Criminal Mind Pt. 2) wants to drown listeners back to an emotional roll. A hauntingly beautiful piano ballad that probably reminds you of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride theme song, this song still ponders the theme of friendship despite a friend is in trouble.
The next track wants listeners to lose themselves in "Don't You Worry 'Bout Me". It's like a roller coaster it brings you to a high to drown you then brings you back up again, grooving to the beat. Nevertheless "Don't You Worry 'Bout Me" is a song that is hard for one to not move your body to its beat. So far most of the songs on this album about Forchhammer's life has been on a rather serious note. "Don't You Worry 'Bout Me" is to tell all his loved ones, despite there were grieving events that happened to his life, he is still staying positive and there is nothing to be worried about him.
As mentioned earlier, like a roller coaster the album is now back to more serious note. A solemn organ chords leading to string instrumentals is the dramatic build up to "What Happened to Perfect". This track is the emotional plea for a relationship to go back the way it used to be.
According to the pattern, now it's time for an upbeat ride. "Strip No More" is the classic adaptation of 60s Motown style, cheekily singing his serenade to a stripper crush named Destiny. Out of the album's more happy, soulful numbers, "Strip No More" is the song that doesn't want you to just groove to it, it wants you to dance to it.
The album closes with "You're Not There" and "Funeral". "You're Not There" is almost like "7 Years" version 2. It is potentially a tear-jerker that grieves about the loss of his father, and certainly one of the best from this album. Not to mention, also my personal favourite.
The album beautifully closes with "Funeral" which is a lyrical and candid version of Lukas Graham hypothetical funeral plannings. Funerals are usually a taboo topic but Lukas Graham has been able to embrace it graciously in this gospel tune.
Lukas Graham (Blue) album has impressively narrated his story into gorgeous melodies, at the same time fused R&B, gospel and soul that largely represents their musical style.
