A tropical house DJ from Norway, born in 1991 who is usually photographed in a cap. You probably yell Kygo first. Well, I actually meant to say Matoma. That's right! There is another tropical house DJ from Norway, born in 1991 who is usually photographed in a cap. Ok maybe the cap part is not quite true ( but really google it they are both in caps!).
Blasting off on Soundcloud and Spotify with his remix of "Old Thing Back" by The Notorious B.I.G. and Ja Rule and Will Smith's "Wild Wild West", Matoma caught the attention of Big Beat records, even making the former into an official single.
Despite better known as a tropical house DJ for most of his production, Matoma is also well known for blending tropical house with a twist of hip hop, occasionally bringing in nu disco into the party. Evidently this can be heard in the two remixes as mentioned earlier.
For his debut album, Matoma released Running Out as the first single, collaborating with fellow Norwegian Astrid S. This is not their first collaboration as Matoma previously has remixed Astrid's single "2AM".
"Running Out" is an electronica ballad with a Matoma's signature tropical house hooks. First listen I thought it is just another tropical house track despite its catchy hooks. But after paying attention to the lyrics then only I hear the sadness in song. Its music video brings out the sadness even more evidently.
Most of Matoma's work that I have heard so far has a joyful, bright sound, which is pretty much what tropical house music brings. However in "Running Out" he took a different direction just like he did with Astrid S's remix previously. Nevertheless, both outcomes are amazing. The best part of it is it grows on you the more you listen to it. It is definitely radio worthy and hopefully it will be played on air worldwide, not just on European or American shores.
On the other hand, Astrid S sounds amazing here. Her voice is sweet yet vulnerable, soft yet powerful. Astrid S reminds me a lot of Zara Larsson because of Zara's hit "Never Forget You" which is also an electronica ballad. Also, maybe because they are both rising Scandinavian female pop artist in their respective countries. Maybe she is the Norwegian Zara Larsson, or Zara Larsson is the Norwegian Astrid S....Eitherway, both tracks are amazing and Astrid S sounds great on this track.
Matoma is certainly carving a name for himself in the industry this year. While he continues remixing songs, he is also producing new tracks for his album "Hakuna Matoma". Meantime, producing tracks for artists like Jason Derulo ft. Jennifer Lopez. Not to mention, he has also produced a track for The Angry Birds Movie called Wonderful Life (Mi Oh My). On top of that, Matoma is busy touring and playing shows on big music festivals like Coachella. So it's safe to say that Matoma is definitely having a good time now!
